Introductory Assessment Lesson

For Children Ages 5+, Teens, and Adults

The First Step in Violin Study at Frederick Talent Education

All prospective students begin with an Introductory Assessment Lesson.

This first meeting is a relaxed, guided lesson designed to help you and your child become acquainted with the violin, experience how lessons are taught, and determine whether Frederick Talent Education is the right fit. Most families begin with questions—that is completely normal. No prior musical experience is required.

The Introductory Assessment Lesson is a genuine working lesson that allows me to observe readiness, coordination, listening skills, learning style, and overall fit for study.

During the lesson, we also discuss the structure of lessons, the role of home practice, and—for younger students—the teacher–parent–student partnership that supports lasting progress.

This first meeting lays the foundation for all future study.

What the Introductory Lesson Provides

During this lesson we:

  • Explore posture, coordination, and basic setup
  • Gently assess developmental readiness for study
  • Introduce the listening approach and lesson structure
  • Discuss how home practice is guided and supported
  • Begin building the teacher–student relationship
  • Introduce the parent’s role for younger students
  • Determine whether the studio is the right fit at this time

Readiness is developmental, not selective.

Who This Lesson Is For

 Children Beginning Violin Study

For young beginners, the focus of this first meeting is comfort, curiosity, readiness, and orientation rather than performance.

Parents attend the full lesson and observe:

  • The structure of Suzuki-style lessons
  • The parent’s role during lessons and home practice
  • How foundational skills are introduced gradually over time

No prior musical experience is expected.
No instrument is required for this lesson.

Teen & Adult Beginners
Teen and adult beginners receive a hands-on introduction to the violin, including:

  • Coordination
  • Listening
  • Foundational technique
  • How practice will be organized and guided

Transfer Students

Transfer students receive an assessment of:

  • Current playing habits and technical development
  • Previously studied materials and repertoire
  • Foundational readiness for continued study

Please bring your instrument and any music or current study materials.

Do We Need a Violin?

Young beginners do not need an instrument for the Introductory Assessment Lesson. Teen and adult students may bring a violin if one is already available.

Brand new beginners: Simply attend with a parent or decision-maker.
Students with prior experience: Bring violin, books, and a short prepared piece.

How Should We Prepare?

Bring any questions you would like to discuss. Simply arrive with a parent or decision-making adult, ready to listen, participate, and explore. Students with prior experience should bring their instrument and a short prepared selection.

Parent Attendance

For students under 18, a parent or decision-maker attends the full lesson.

Quiet observation and note-taking are encouraged.

For students under 18, a parent or decision-making adult attends the full lesson.

Quiet observation and note-taking are encouraged. For young beginners, guidance in how to support listening and home practice is incorporated into the early lessons.

After the Introductory Lesson

Following the lesson, if the studio appears to be a good fit and both the family and teacher are ready to proceed, you will be invited to complete enrollment and reserve an available weekly lesson time.

Students beginning during the Summer Session typically continue through the scheduled Summer Session. Students beginning in late summer or early fall may enter the 2026–2027 Studio Year according to availability.

Small beginner group classes may occasionally be offered during the Summer Session when enrollment permits.

Introductory Assessment Lesson Fee: $65

The $65 fee reserves the appointment and covers the full Introductory Assessment Lesson.

Families who enroll within seven days of the assessment lesson receive a $35 credit toward enrollment.

Because lesson times are reserved specifically for each family, assessment lesson fees are nonrefundable. The lesson must be scheduled within 30 days of payment.
